General information
Mayrhofen is the main town included in the area covered by the Zillertal Superski Pass. The resort is located southeast from Innsbruck, in the heart of the fascinating Austrian Tyrol. It is set at only 630 m above sea level beneath the vast skiing terrains of the Zillertal. Mayrhofen, unlike most of its Tyrolean neighbours, is a town in itself, with all facilities offered by “contemporary civilization”. The resort caters most for families and young crowds searching for relax or entertainment, and manages to
assure both while not letting them impede each other’s best holiday experience.
Winter activities
Skiing in Mayrhofen may not be one of the best in Austria, but still offers access to the unique amount and variety of runs and off-piste in the immense Zillertal. Two disadvantages define the resort as “not first class” in skiing – the low altitude and the lift-system, which is a bit old and does not ensure sufficient connection with the surrounding skiing opportunities. Direct access is assured to 101 km of the overall 450 km in the Zillertal. Still, skiing here is great for intermediates and especially for beginners with one of the most prestigious skiing schools all over Austria. Another plus is the direct access to the Hintertux Glacier – skiing all year round on the 18 km of runs. Advanced skiers could find some better skiing on the Glacier, but still more challenging areas to recommend are the nearby resorts or the off-piste, which is quite tempting. A snow park and a half pipe are available for boarders, mainly catering for intermediates.
Among other winter activities tourists will find a toboggan run, an ice-rink, sleigh-riding, curling and 45 km of footpaths. On the other hand, Mayrhofen is really profiled in assuring relax and excellent in-door entertainment. Leisure and sport centers are set to respond to all requirements you may have. Enjoy a sauna or a swim in the top-class in-door pools, play some tennis, squash, bowling or go to a solarium. Mayrhofen has really plenty to offer.
Summer activities
Mayrhofen is not only a winter, but also a very popular summer resort in the Tyrolian Alps and offers a great holiday in the picturesque Ziller Valley. The spectacular panorama reveals green pastures and colourful meadows, as well as snow-capped peaks and impressive ridges that will stay in your heart forever. There is a wide choice of summer activities both for energetic visitors and leisure travellers who prefer relaxing walking and promenades. A 200km of maintained hiking trails will provide you great opportunities for summer mountaineering, both self-guided and with a professional guide. The Hintertux glacier is not for a miss, so include it as a site in your touring schedule during the holiday, especially if you like to try summer skiing. Take the Penken gondola to reach the Ahorn, where the magnificent panorama over Mayrhofen will take your breath away. Mountain biking, horse-riding, golf, tennis, swimming and adventure sports are among the other possibilities in the area. Have a break at the cosy mountain restaurants and try a typical Austrian meal in a friendly ambience. The fresh mountain air and comfortable bed at the hotel or other accommodation option will ensure your excellent sleep.
Additional information
Apres-ski is another hit in the resort. Plenty of restaurants of any kind you may wish to try – from Pizzerias to Tyrolean, from French to Chinese, cafes, bars, bistros and pubs. Nightclubs of all styles and for all ages will shelter you for an unforgettable night experience. Brief, if you are searching for the best vacation for your family, if you do not insist on skiing all the time, if you are young and longing for fun day and night, this is the place.
