Galtur, the small alpine village located in western Tyrol near Switzerland, has been inspiration for many. Hemmingway said once 'It's an Alpine Idyl' and dedicated a story to it.
Galtur is “high” in many ways. First of all it is at about 1600 m. above the sea and this impressive altitude has many advantages – “high” amounts of crispy snow and a long-lasting snow season. As to skiing, Galtur is really high-class. 40 kilometers of runs on a skiing terrain of great variety offer choices for all abilities. One of the highest resorts in Austria, Galtur is the highest ski village in the Silvetta Region. It is located at the entrance of the Paznaun Valley and offers access to the other resorts in the region as well as to the Swiss duty-free resort Samnaun. The population of the village is about 800. Galtur is a charming mountain settlement of a typical Tyrolean style. Its long history of more than 600 years is still witnessed by the old pilgrimage church in the center of the village.
