Rauris, Austria guide

Rauris introduction

You’ve had enough of glamorous publicity of modern alpine hotels and resorts, you need a different touch of tourist experience for your winter holiday, you’re curious and you’re a nature lover, or you want it all. Then you should know a secret – the secret of the picturesque Rauris resort hidden in the old goldsmith valley in the Hohe Tauern National Park between the Gastein valley and Zell am See. At 950 m above the sea, in the heart of Hohe Tauern – the highest mountain of the Austrian Alps, you will find a unique ensemble of traditions, historical sites, magical nature and skiing opportunities.

Skiing traditions in Rauris have more than 100 years of history. The first ski season took place in 1902, but the story tells that earlier Wilhelm Ritter von Arlt together with goldmine-owner Ignanz Rojacher brought the first skis from a study trip to Scandinavia back to Rauris. Soon a group of skiing lovers was formed around Ritter von Arlt. At that time the equipment was quite simple, consisting of wooden planks with no edges, bended up at the tip. For more than a century now skiing takes place there – mainly on the Hochalm and the suitable areas in the upper surroundings of the village. Experts say the pistes are best for beginners and intermediates who can really enjoy practicing on the vertical drop of 1250 m. But skiing professionals, as well as snowboarders, love the challenges and the variety of the nearby off-piste terrains. Though a secret pearl in the alpine necklace of excellent resorts, you can count on Rauris to assure you the best of entertainment and holiday opportunities. All kinds of winter sports – tobogganing (even at night), sleigh rides, guided snow shoe walks, curling, 30 km of marked winter hiking trails, together with modernly equipped bowling alleys, tennis and squash halls among many others.

Rauris has its own charm and spirit and you’ll be captivated. Some years ago the people of Rauris had to make a decision – to transform their village into a mass tourism site or to keep traditions and nature in their everlasting beauty. They opted for the second. Today Rauris has preserved the warmth of countryside life and the variety of plants and animals in the magnificent Hohe Tauern national park. So you can imagine the delights of a walk around the village in the midst of mountain beauty and snowy forests - you could not see it elsewhere.

In fact Rauris has strong traditions in keeping traditions. Its history goes far behind in the past as it has been a place of continuous settlement. Numerous finds witness the presence of civilizations like Great Macedonia from the time of King Philip or even the Egyptians.

You can best experience local spirit of history, traditions and hospitality by sitting in some of the 18 local restaurants or in a cosy après-ski bar. You will be served a traditional local meal, home-made food or international cuisine, if you’d prefer. And one you should not miss is a visit to the Rauris Schnapps distillery.

A perfect family destination, Rauris will reveal for you its secrets and will make you feel unique with the singularity of its natural charms and traditional hospitality. Tourists and history explorers, nature lovers and romantic adventurers, you will all be eager to discover more and more of its charming mysteries.
