Obertauern introduction
The resort village of Obertauern is estimated one of the top 5 Austrian winter vacation sites. In fact it was born only about 50 years ago, when a group of people who frequented the area discovered the unique qualities of the terrain and especially of the snow. Their idea of creating a small ski village was quickly carried out and thus Obertauern was created. Though many of the Austrian, Swiss or German ski resorts had similar history, Obertauern impressed with its fast-progressing development – hotels, ski pistes and resorts spread quickly along the mountainside and turned the small ski-village into one of the top European winter destinations.
Snow in Obertauern is unique. And what is more important – lasts longer. The village’s location and its high altitude of 1740 m assure the advantage of 9 to 10 months of snow season. You could have troubles in finding vacant rooms in May when all other resorts have already closed and preparing for next season.
The skiing terrain of Obertauern is not too big, though of impressive variety. The resort offers 120 km of ski pistes but the vertical drops is of only 600m. The ski terrain is suitable for all kind of skiers, but experts define it best for intermediates. Indeed, this is the perfect place to practice and improve and if eager to do it you’d better join the excellent local ski school. The resort is perfectly equipped – there are lift links to the pistes on both sides of the village and the slope is always impeccably maintained. However, if you are a professional skier or a snowboard fan, do not look for another place to have practice and fun – there is plenty of off-piste in Obertauern, so you can spend a great time there!
Non-skiers should not be bored in Obertauern. Besides enjoying the fresh air and the delightful scenery of the snow white peaks, they can take advantage of the other facilities offered by the village sport center, play tennis or bowling, go hiking in the mountain or enjoy the excellent spa opportunities.
Obertauern will warmly welcome you and accommodate you in its large lodging base, represented mainly by hotels. And it will assure you all the details of a comfortable and entertaining vacation. The restaurants, most of which are at the hotels, are really worth visiting, but still, if you prefer the relaxing Apres-ski or the friendly atmosphere of the local pubs you will have plenty of possibilities to fully enjoy them.
