Skiing in Kaprun, Austria

skiing Kaprun is a resort in the wonderful Austrian Alps. It has an older twin - -the town of Zell am See, situated at 10 minutes by bus. The nearest international airport is that of Salzburg (80 km); if you access it from Germany, it is a 3-hour drive from Munich. The main pistes are red and blue in terms of difficulty (respectively 9 and 12), but the facts on the plus side are much more: there are over 130 km of downhill ski runs; we don't speak of season at Kaprun, because you can ski there all year round! That is due to the high altitude - pistes over 2500 m; and the adjacent glacier. The other two perfect skiing areas, apart from the glacier, are Maiskogel and Schuttdorf. A regular free ski bus service which runs every 20 minutes (1 hour in the summer) connects all the areas and resorts. Cross-country skiers will be delighted to hear that they can enjoy 18 km of well-groomed pistes. The lowest piste of the resort reaches 770 m, which is not low at all. The resort itself is situated at 800 m. There are 58 lifts (4 trams, 4 gondolas, 14 chairs, 36 surface), among which the most popular is the gondola, which people take to reach Smittenhohe. The longest piste is 7 km long. Advanced skiers can try there hand at the nine long medium-steep black pistes, descending through the forest back down to the resort. Several of them are usually mogulled, and Kaprun has a reputation for good off-piste powder (when conditions demand it). The most attractive to tourists remains visiting Kaprun's glacier and skiing on the Kitzsteinhorn Glacier. Kaprun offers snowboarders a fully-equipped snow park. Kaprun is one of the sunniest ski resorts in Austria - slopes face north and south - don't forget your suntan! Another important tip to those of you who will have the pleasure to visit this gem-resort: don't go without booking a place to sleep well in advance, as it is a top destination for many people and seeking a place to stay after you have already arrived can be quite risky. The additional entertainments includes mountain biking, guided hiking, curling. Après-ski activities are so multifarious that you needn't spend two nights at the same place - piano-bars, pubs, discos are at your disposal. Of course, the main variety is created by the people of all kind of nationalities, who you will meet and party with at Kaprun. The authentic Tyrolean atmosphere mingles naturally with the modern innovations. Kaprun is also interesting from historical point of view - there is a whole castle there, built 500 years ago (where now a private foundation organize variety of events) - having said that, we can firmly reassure you that you will have an "Austria in miniature" when you go to Kaprun, any time of year. The very fact that bookings are made as early as one year in advance, speaks for itself - since people return and recommend the place, it's worth going!
