Obervellach is a lovely mountain resort, located in the spectacular Austrian region Carinthia with the highest mountain in Austria, the Grossglockner to the west, and the Karawanken Mountains to the south. It is tucked away amongst the slopes, impressing with a breathtaking panorama to the Ankogel ski arena and to the Mölltal Glacier. Apart from being at the foot of the mountain, the charming town enjoys also an enviable position next to the riverside of Drau and large bathing lakes that due their excellent water quality earned Carinthia the European Environment Award. At the altitude of 680 metres you can experience the advantages of the clear alpine air and mild climate. Obervellach has it all to ensure the best of your winter or summer holidays.
Winter activities
A true skiing paradise as it is, this part of Carinthia offers you a number of winter sports including downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. A variety of pistes should also satisfy backcountry enthusiasts, who will appreciate their adrenaline-raising activity amongst the scenic mountain areas. Ski schools organise courses for the beginners and everyone who wishes to improve their skills. Moreover, there are other superb activities, such as horse-drawn sleigh rides, winter walking and snowshoeing, all letting you discover the marvelous beauties of the Carinthian mountains. At the end of the cold day, there is nothing better than enjoying the revitalising effects of the sauna, or relishing a cup of hot Glühwein in one of the pleasant pubs or bars in the town.

When the snow and icy cover of the splendid lakes melt, the area regains its natural appearance. Sparkling waters and picturesque landscape create great conditions for boat trips, swimming, fishing and other exciting activities. Hikers will be amazed by the none-to-one scenery, extending from the Wörther See to the Hohe Tauern National Park. What's more, excursions are organised, especially for the followers of mountaineering who are eager to climb the ridges and summits in search for breathtaking views. Those who prefer other, no less exciting, sports can choose between canyoning, canoeing or rafting along the river as well as mountain biking, hunting, and paragliding above the postcard-like scenery.

Obervellach cultivates its local traditions, providing a great chance for the visitors to attend a brass music or organ concerts, as well as another folklore events, organised all year round. Rich history of the region is reflected in a large selection of tourist sights, including museums, such as the City Museum of Friesach, three castles, as well as Gothic and Renaissance churches like Gurk, Maria Saal and Viktring. In the evening you can stroll around the village, step into one of the numerous restaurants and taste the local specialties such as Kärntner nudel, not forgetting about a cinnamon cake filled with raisins as a desert.
