Beautiful name for a beautiful resort, picturesquely located on a rocky peninsula on the southern side of Wörthersee. The whole municipality consists of four different towns – Maria Wörth, Reifnitz, Dellach and Sekirn – called “the heart of the Lake of Wörth.” It is considered as an ideal place for family summer holidays, as the nature here remains unpolluted, so that you can even drink water directly from the lake. Moreover, Maria Wörth has historical sites, especially the Late Gothic parish church, surrounded
by water on three sides, with an impressive altar and Madonna figure, as well as the Rosary Church housing 15-Century frescos. Classical music lovers will surely appreciate the fact that the south coast inspired Gustave Mahler, who created four of his symphonies here.
Summer activities
Attractions of the region are numerous and obviously connected with the lakeside. Fishermen enjoy peaceful mornings on the calm water rich in 17 species of fish. Imagine that the biggest one caught so far weighed 58 kilos! The nearby Reifnitz is a perfect place for all sportsmen. You can try all water sports including surfing, sailing, boat trips and parasailing. There are also tracks for running, Nordic walking and cycling. If you wish to play golf, go to Dellach, as it has the oldest court in Carinthia and best “greens” of the region. Sekirn attracts with natural beauties such as frogs, amphibians, butterflies and rare marsh plants to be observed in the nature heritage zone. As a matter of fact, any excursion from Maria Wörth gives you a precious chance of experiencing pure nature.
Winter activities
Maria Wörth is worth visiting also in winter. This time of the year the lakeside is especially calm, peaceful and beautiful. Hiking is a great pastime. Moreover, you can try ice skating and curling. If you are fond of skiing, you can go to Bodensdorf (north-east of Wörthersee) which is one of the closest winter resorts located in the vicinity of the Gerlitzen Alpe offering great conditions and comfortable facilities.

You should also take some time to try Austrian home-cooking and regional specialities, including fish from the lake, and delicious ice-cream and Apfelstrudel.
