Ehrenberg ruins
You can take a 7-century journey back in time in the Ehrenberg Klause in Reutte, 15 km away from Berwang. The pathway will take you through the darkest times of the Middle Ages, fortified walls, macabre legends, high towers, and a great deal of history. Ever since it was first built Ehrenberg Castle has been extended and modified continuously, so that today traces of more than half a millennium of history remain. The dams, the fortress, the road blockade (Klause) beneath the castle, the customs buildings, and the castle itself have a wealth of history to tell, like that of the Fort Claudia, built by the Tyrolean Duchess Claudia between 1439 and 1445. It stands to this day, a true symbol of liberty.
Bavarian Castles
A trip to the Zugspitz Arena ensures the one-of-a-kind opportunity to stroll through regal vestiges for an entire day. First you cross the border into Bavaria. The first splendid building of the series is Fuessen, followed by Neuschwanstein Castle. After that you can see Hohenschwangau, Steingaden, and Wieskirche, featuring the typical rococo style. The abbey in Ettal and the theater in Oberammergau are forewarnings of heavenly regency. The final stop is Linderhof Castle, which is a touch more worldly. The distance to the castles is between 40 km and 163 km depending on the route you choose.
Via Claudia
The Via Claudia, a regional hiking trail, is an attraction in Pfunds, a village 8 km away from Berwang. It offers four path zones and a length of 50 km, and was developed over 5 years. Around two millenniums ago the Roman conquerors enlarged the old route across the Reschen passageway with the aim to establish firmer connections between Rome and its northern provinces. This is the Via Claudia today. It is an easy walk – naturally you won't cover the whole length of it – and a truly special experience.
