The “Mozart” Village
© Wolfgangsee Tourismus
( 18 km away from St. Wolfgang )
The quaint St. Gilgen was promoted as the Mozart Village in 2005, as it nurtured a close connection with the great composer in a historical plan. His sister came to live here after she got married, his grandfather worked here, and his mother was born here. For these reasons and more St. Gilgen has many monuments associated with Mozart. These include the Mozart Memorial House, the fountain dedicated to Mozart's mother, St. Gilgen parish church, and the fountain immortalizing Mozart himself. Mozart's mother was born in what is today the Mozart Memorial House. The house was built by Mozart's grandfather on the order of the Prince Archbishop of Salzburg. He finished it in 1720.

Lake Wolfgang

The bigger part of Lake Wolfgang is located in the state of Salzburg in Austria. It lies in the Salzkammergut resort area. The Osterhorngruppe mountain range is located to the south of the lake and has an elevation of 1800 metres. As a top summer destination Lake Wolfgang has excellent nautical sport facilities. First of all, the lake is a perfect open-air swimming pool with pure and clean water. Other sports that are available are tube-riding, water-skiing, parachuting over the lake, conventional sailing, and fishing. During winter you can go skiing, snowboarding, or Nordic walking.

Salzburg
( 32 km away from St. Gilgen, 49 km away from St. Wolfgang )
A visit to the Salzkammergut area would be incomplete without passing through Salzburg, Mozart's hometown. Salzburg is 50 km away from St. Wolfgang and 31 km away from St. Gilgen. It has more to offer than a beautiful alpine setting – it is noted for its Baroque architecture, specifically the Mirabell Garden and the Salzburg Cathedral. Skiing is a major pastime during winter, and the city is a gateway to skiing regions to the south. Next to Salzburg is the Untersberg mountain, straddling the Austrian-German border. On clear days the view is indescribably scenic.
