ALTFINSTERMÜNZ FORTRESS
( 20 km away from Fiss, 24 km away from Sefaus )
One of the interesting attractions in Pfunds is the Altfinstermünz. The fortress has always been very important due to its strategic central location. It served as a border post and a connecting point between the Engadin, the Vinschgau, and the Inntal valley. The bridge today dates back to medieval times, but a defensive structure on this site dates back to Roman times. The Romans built a road for military purposes through the ravine and a wooden bridge across the River Inn. The fortifications on this site were first mentioned in 1263. There is evidence that this perilous, winding road was already in use around 1380.
Via Claudia
( 20 km away from Fiss, 24 km away from Sefaus )
Another attraction in Pfunds is the Via Claudia, a regional hiking trail. It offers four path zones and a length of 50 km, and was developed over 5 years. Around two millenniums ago the Roman conquerors enlarged the old route across the Reschen passageway with the aim to establish firmer connections between Rome and its northern provinces. This is the Via Claudia today. It is an easy walk – naturally you won't cover the whole length of it – and a truly special experience.
Erdpyramiden
( 3 km away from Fiss )
These earth pyramids survive from the ice age and are located on a lateral hill of the moraine, which stretches from the Köllner House to Serfaus. Due to the absence of a stone on top of them, unlike the case with other pyramids, they are not protected from further erosion. This is what makes them so special. They exist because of the proportionally little rainfall and compact moraine material.
UNSERE LIEBE FRAU IN WALDE
( 3 km away from Fiss )
The number 427 is engraved on the back of the Serfeus Madonna statue – this may or may
not be its specific date of origin. However, the fact that it originated in a very early Christian community cannot be debated. This pilgrimage church is the oldest of its kind in Tirol. The most common theory is that it was built in the 9th century. Guided tours are arranged by community archivist Alfred Tschuggmall. You must book in advance. The trip is suitable for groups, senior citizens, and families. Facilities for disabled visitors are available.
