Lungo Attractions

Judenburg Town Tower
( 103 km away from Katschberg, 121 km away from Obertauern )
Located 103 km away from Katschberg and 109 km away from Obertauern, the town of Judenburg is a great destination for a one-day excursion. Sprawling in alpine fields on the Mur river, the town is both a travel destination and a hub of industry. Its most notable attraction is the Town Tower, which dates back to the 15th century. It dominates the skyline. In the past it served as an observation tower and was intended to protect against fire. Prior to 1840 the tower had a Baroque-style onion-shaped roof. Over the years additions were made, and in the 19th century its height exceeded 80 meters. There is an infinite number of steps to the top, but the climb is worth it.

Mauterndorf castle
( 7 km away from Katschberg, 28 km away from Obertauern )
Mauterndorf castle is the symbol of St. Michael im Lungau, a quaint village in the Lungau area. The majestic walls of this historical castle contain a cultural center, a tavern, a chapel, and a museum today. The archbishops of Salzburg were so fascinated by the beauty of the area once that they made the castle their summer residence. Back in Roman times there was a key trade route passing through the Hohe Tauern and what is Mauterndorf today. The castle was built as a tolling station to protect the town. Extensions were made to the castle complex in the 1400s. In 1806 the state acquired it.
Mauterndorf is also charming year-round resort has only. The chapels has a winged altar dating back to the mid-15th century and houses interesting Gothic frescoes. Today it serves as a cultural center with exhibits, theatrical performances, lectures, concerts and other events. Of note is the Langau Landscape Museum, a museum of natural history housed in the castle.

Mariapfarr
( 22 km away from Katschberg, 23 km away from Obertauern )
The quaint town of Mariapfarr is situated to the north of Lungo at an altitude of 1120 m. With just 1800 inhabitants, it has numerous ski lifts, making it an attractive destination for skies. The main attraction in the town, however, is the pilgrimage church. It houses a crucifix dating back to the early 15th century (in St. George's chapel), 16th century panels in a Gothic altar, a "Standing Madonna with Child" and a dazzling cross in the form of a triumphal arch. The 16th century panels are now a part of the Neo-Gothic altar. Some elegant friezes, depicting scenes from Jesus' life, were discovered when restoration was carried out in the choir in 1946.
